It has been announced that HPV testing is going to become available in the NHS cervical screening programme. Clearly not directly related to pregnancy, but this news is significant for all women.
It helps differentiate between minor abnormalities on smears that need further investigation and those that can be safely left alone. In the past women might have a result called “borderline” which required follow up. Now with a borderline smear, if the HPV test is negative further investigation is not needed and the patient can go back to the normal NHS screening protocol.
